An ancient craft

Richard is demonstrating how to make a putcher from willow and hazel. Putchers were used on the River Severn to trap fish, especially salmon. Arranged in ranks, they utilised the tidal flow which swept the fish into them. Once inside a putcher, fish were trapped.

As putchers are no longer used on the Severn, Richard says he will probably grow runner beans in this one!
