Sgwarnog: In the Field

Grebe

A trip up to football at Ilkley gave an opportunity for a pre-match walk around the adjacent Ben Rhydding Gravel Pits. The nature reserve was fairly quiet, but I did spy this Little Grebe on the River Wharfe.

Ilkley were hosting Bacup Borough in a league cup first round fixture. It was the first time I’d seen them since pre-season but they’ve had a strong start to the year. The two teams were well matched but the Lancastrians  got the only goal with a penalty. 0-1 the final score.

As always at this ground, the circling Red Kites and Buzzards gave extra interest through the match, and as I returned to the station I noticed 100+ wintering Curlew were settling down for the night in a neighbouring field (extra).
