Sand Bay, North Somerset

We know from Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in the LornaL journal, and now available as a podcast series) that in May 1940, Lorna Lloyd and her mother left their home in Malvern to visit relations in Bristol. (Lorna's father was away on active service at the time. He was most likely involved in activities that led to the evacuation of Dunkirk at the end of the month.)

On Monday 13th May 1940 Lorna, her mother, and other members of the family travelled from Bristol to enjoy a picnic at Sand Bay in North Somerset. Blipper Colstro kindly sent us this shot of modern-day Sand Bay to add to our album of photographs of places that Lorna mentions in her Diary of the war. Thank you Colstro

Hear Lorna's great-great niece - actor Bethany Ray - read the diary entry that relates the picnic at Sand Bay in Episode 6 of the podcast series of the Diary of the war.

Listed below are many more locations mentioned in Lorna's war diary that we would like to collect for this journal, including another 17 in England. If you have a photograph(s) of any of the places (that you have not blipped already), please do send it(them) to h.hall@napier.ac.uk and we will feature it(them) alongside the others that we have been blipping here since 13th July 2022
