What's that noise

This is Roddy, my friend's dog. He's lovely and very well behaved. He got quite a fright tonight when literally hundreds of birds flew overhead making the most incredible noise. He refused to move for quite a while. It also seemed to upset the cows in the nearby field. The extra ( if you zoom in) shows some of them in the distance as they flew away.
