Gateway to Cairness

Autumn sunshine illuminating the beech trees along the drive to Cairness House. The imposing gatepiers are topped by inscrutable sphinxes which, like much of the architecture of the house, have Masonic significance. Designed by Thomas Playfair they were built in 1891- a century after the construction of the house.
