Shortly after we moved into this house 30+ years ago, we needed to light up our front steps. By chance we heard that all the old converted gas lamps were being replaced and sold as scrap. I don't remember how much it cost but it was a lot less than we paid to have the lantern made for the top. A few years later they became fashionable and even replicas cost a fortune.
