LITTLE TERNS

Sterna albifrons

One of Britain's rarest seabirds, so rarity trumps inadequate photography, for which I apologise (it was on maximum enlargement, without a tripod and in a fairly stiff breeze). This wasn't at the bird sanctuary, just on the beach near families having picnics and in company with other birds. There's a breeding colony of them a couple of miles to the north, which is carefully protected, but obviously some of them escape from time to time for a little recreation on the beach.

A tern for the better
