Centre of communication

I was looking after a relative who has health issues and didn't manage to get out and about.  Looking out of the window I saw this telephone pole with wires coming from houses around to meet up at the top of the pole.  Generally, cables coming to homes around are underground nowadays, so this is a bit unusual.
