Dinosaurs? Aisle 2

Here be dinosaurs. If you are looking for them they’re on Aisle 2, eating all the bread rolls and guzzling sports drinks.

This is our local Pak’n’Save on this silly Saturday. If you are not familiar, it is sort of like a Costco, but smaller and you don’t buy in bulk. So I suppose it’s not really like Costco at all. Except that it’s generally cheaper than your regular supermarkets (we don’t yet have Aldi here). Also, things aren’t necessarily available when you want them, and you have to pack your own bags. Plus comedian Rhys Darby (whom you may remember as the band manager in Flight of the Conchords) does the recorded store announcements.

On the subject of supermarkets, we now have our first Costco in New Zealand, which is a source of delight for my American friends. By most accounts, the opening has been shambolic — things aren’t available or where you’d expect them, and the store is crowded (we only have one store, after all).

Personally, I hate shopping in supermarkets and would rather go back to the corner store grocery and home deliveries. Yes, even if it meant you couldn’t buy a dinosaur (that said, I’ve never seen one in stock).
