Richmond Theatre: Spike

More unexpectedly music-tech-y in large
Back blip

Mum, Im, and I went to see 'Spike' at the Richmond Theatre. 'Spike' is a new comedy by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman about Spike Milligan and The Goon Show, and focussing on Spike's struggles with his own temperament and illness, the BBC, and his collaborators. I was pleased that it also included quite a lot on the BBC Radiophonic Workshop (or its precursors) and the sound effects involved in The Goon Show.
It was a strange mixture of absurdly funny and rather poignantly bleak, and certainly captured both the hilarity of The Goon Show and Spike Milligan's struggles with the absurd juxtapositions in his own experience of life.

I found it a bit patchy in pacing and tone, but thought that the cast and production were excellent, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
