Russian Church

Russians were the first Europeans to discover Alaska, the first sighting being in 1648. In the late 1730's a larger expedition was sent, and in 1741 the first European landed on the northwest coast of North America. The Russians realized the riches in furs, and thus began to build settlements. They established the Russian Orthodox religion in many of the Native Alaskan villages. This Russian Orthodox Church is in the town of Kenai, which is about 20 miles from where I live.
The original log church was built here in 1849, and this building replaced it in 1895. It's considered the oldest building on the Kenai Peninsula and is still used today.
