Project Sturgeon

Over the summer 26 fiberglass jumping sturgeon appeared along the sidewalks of Water Street in Augusta. The fish were created and installed by a local company in Belfast, then painted by local artists. Each one is as unique as its designer. Some are realistic, many bold and colorful, one’s tattooed, another camouflaged, but all are wonderful and fun to see • The project was funded by a Hometown Grant. The sturgeon will be removed soon and put away for winter before making another appearance in May. Next Fall they will be auctioned off with the proceeds funding future local art projects • Each summer real sturgeon swim and spawn in the Kennebec River, which is why most central Mainers keep a close eye because if you’re timing is right you’ll get to witness and marvel the acrobatic sturgeon leap high into the air only to return to the river with a big splash. It’s a head-turning sound :) • Have a joyful and peaceful weekend!
