Whitby - the herring girls

A very pleasant, although chilly day spent in Whitby and it stopped raining!   The blip is of one of several made by local sculpturer Emma Stothard.  The herring girls were women from Scotland and the Scottish islands who followed the herring fleet down the east coast and who would process the herrings as they came off the boats; cold, hard and smelly work.
There was no rain but the aftermath of the weather could be seen in the sea; the tides were wild with huge plumes of water racing towards the land.  So exhilarating, l loved it and could have stood all day watching it (extras).
