Fierce bold fungi

I spotted this on the walk today, you can almost see it bursting out of the silage. I googled - there's a forum! It's riveting. Not sure I'm any wiser but here are some comments after one new farmer wrote in for advice about a similar fungi explosion from his silage:

Throw up a picture of the bale`s lad . How high have you them stacked , and how long did you leave them in the field after been wrapped before stacking them

A lot of lads leave the bales out overnight wrapped, and by the time they get to them in the morning to stack, the crows were up at the crack of dawn and have them riddled

I always thought it was down to bits of wood and the like picked up from around the headlands.

I see that happening an awful lot in bales that are very dry and didn't get a double wrap. By double wrap I mean 32 revolutions on the wrapper don't know what ye call that

I mowed for two men one day last summer fair enough different grass diff soil but both was left down for 3 days one lad gave it 8 layers the other left it at 4. Surprise surprise the one with 4 has that growing out of them .i take it yad have a combi baler in the field? never heard of this been done before. kinda makes sense tho, help bales keep their shape, stop the net exploding and at same time if loader man nicks a bita plastic wit the loader its not end of the world

Right so.  It's split gill fungus apparently.
