Flora de Maio

This is a flower from a cactus type plant growing in my neighbor's backyard. The name is appropriate as this plant only flowers in May. It's a native to Southern Brazil, but seems to do just fine in Northern California. I took a piece of the plant last year, stuck it in a jar with some water and now I have a piece growing. My neighbor told me that if I plant it, it will bloom.
