Sheffield

Today's image for our LornaLPodcast journal depicts Sheffield. Here are the Victoria Quays They are found in the centre of Sheffield, at the western end of the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal.

We are grateful to iaint for supplying this shot - thank you! iaint explains that the city of Sheffield is England’s fourth largest, and synonymous with steel making. However, much of this industry has disappeared over the last 40 years.

Those familiar with the LornaL blipfoto journal will know that Sheffield is central to the story of war diarist Lorna Lloyd. Lorna lived here from the age of 11 in 1925 (or possibly age 10 in 1924) until she left home to study at Girton College, Cambridge in 1933. The reason that Lorna's family lived in Sheffield is that her father worked in the steel industry until the mid-1930s.  (He later came out of retirement to return to military service when war broke out, and was awarded an MBE in 1943 for putting his knowledge of metals to good use in Africa.)

While Sheffield features numerous times in the Lornal journal, Lorna only refers to the city directly once in her war diary. On 5th December 1940 she mentions Sheffield in remarks about the bombing of British cities and her sense of home. In addition, on 31st December the same year she reports the destruction of St Mark's, Broomhill - the church where she was confirmed. Listen to Lorna's great-great niece actress Bethany Ray read Lorna's words from these diary entries in Episode 7 and Episode 8 of our podcast series of the Diary of the war.
