Cité de Conflans

After a bit of a traumatic day yesterday with a hike on a washed out clifftrail, we decided to have a relaxing more touristy day visiting a medieval city down the valley. It's just above Albertville, host city of the 1992 winter Olympics, and just a short walk from the Albertville train station. The first records of the town date from the 11th century, but apparently the streets and paths have stayed the same since 1300's. There is a beautiful old church, cobblestone streets, terraced gardens, and of course a medieval castle. The entire town looks more or less like this, with terraced streets, wisteria and grape vines, and arches between the very-old buildings to hold them up. We had a picnic high on the hill just when the clouds were breaking and the sun started to shine, and then we walked down into Albertville to shop and meet Monsieur Max and Fabienne for drinks. A day of repose well spent so we will be ready for a hike (with snowshoes, just in case) tomorrow.
