The Opera House

Today is our last full day in Oslo and I have to admit the pace is slowing ever so slightly ;-)

We spent the day experiencing more Norwegian culture by going to the Opera … House.  It was opened in 2008 and is situated on the waterfront.  It is a modern, sharp edged design which creates the illusion of glistening ice, like a glacier rising, from the Oslofjord.

It has a rather stark interior at the heart of which is a wooden Wave Wall which was designed by Norwegian boatbuilders.  The walls are curved and are said to resemble breaking waves.

The building is home to the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet companies.  The café was a great place to have coffee and Kanelsnurrer (cinnamon and cardamom twist buns), Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite playing over the sound system, making it a very ‘sweet’ experience ;-)

We continued our walk round the fjord finishing at Aker Brygge, a major shopping and entertainment centre with the city’s biggest concentration of restaurants.  We have had our meals here but this time it was the shops we were browsing through and saying, “We can buy that at home for half the price!!!

We have enjoyed our day, it was another chilly one at -4°C!

The Opera House is today’s main image and there are a few others to view, if you haven’t lost interest yet, including one of Mrs CBL climbing towards the tip of the ‘glacier’ which, thankfully, she did successfully.

 Better viewed large!
