of all things

It was around this point that the full extent of the kitchen wall tiling became clear. On the floor, there were two layers, with some big square stone things covered by brick-layout smaller oblongs. On the wall, removing one of the big cupboards showed that the most recent layer had been applied after the current cupboard arrangement was created, and that there were two layers beneath - even on the extension bit, which ought surely to have been newer than at least one decoration. At this point we hadn't yet discovered that the tiles in the older/original section had been stuck on top of the wallpaper, which was itself stuck on top of the original layer of waist-height tiles.
