Agua

Another travel day – by taxi to Trinidad, a drive of somewhere between six and seven hours, split along the way in a taxi rank on the outskirts of Havana, and somewhat less interesting than the one between Havana and Vinales, even if the first section must have pretty much mirrored it on reflection. Our first driver did have to stop along the way, seemingly to trade half a pig for a pair of shoes. Certainly the scenery improved after we left the autopista and headed towards the coast. Trinidad is beautiful and photogenic – the largely Spanish Colonial Centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Sight – and seems a bit less work for the traveller in having a bit less hustle and a few more places to escape the sun and have a quiet drink. The power cuts are a bit of a pain – and the internet is still rubbish – but ‘don’t worry’, says our host, Manel from Barcelona, ‘all the restaurants have generators…!’ One of us was still feeling a bit frail, so we stuck to pasta…
