Guyanara

We’d booked a bus excursion into the interior – imagine our surprise when, instead of a nice air-conditioned vehicle, we discovered we were travelling in a Russian ex-army truck. “Russian Lorry, Chinese engine, Cuban driver,” said our guide, “you’re in safe hands…!” We stopped at the inevitable mirador along the way, and at a coffee plantation, where our guide talked us through the production and we enjoyed a suitably excellent espresso. Then we stopped at the Parc Guyanara and hiked along the river, past a pretty spectacular waterfall to a lovely forest pool that we could swim in. On the way back to the truck we stopped at a very picturesque hacienda for a surprisingly good lunch of chicken and rice, taro, fruit and coffee. And then, later on, Café Helado was back on the menu, just in time…!
