Lights to the world?

I tried to take a photo of the beautifully-hued post-sunset sky, but my phone was not up to the challenge (blame the tools!). Instead you get a (not much better) shot of a house that is going all-out with the light-up inflatables. Must take my camera and work out how to take good shots of Christmas lights (hints are welcome)
