Friday Walk

A beautiful day, & we walked a route south across Kelling Heath, through various lanes & woods, & passing the ruins of Baconsthorpe Castle on the way back. The castle was originally built & developed by the Heydon family in the 15th & 16th centuries, financed by their profits from the wool trade. Apparently the family wasn't very skilled at managing their finances, though, & ended up with massive debts which resulted in their selling parts of the estate & demolishing parts of the castle & selling off the reclaimed stone. The castle is now owned by English Heritage; it's currently shut to the public, which we knew, but I hadn't really expected the building site fencing & large signs which made photography difficult! The main Blip is part of the castle wall & moat & the first extra is the gatehouse, both taken from angles chosen to minimise the fencing & scaffolding. The other extra is just an example of some of the colours passed on the route this morning!
