Knotty Problem

Shots were hard to come by today with no real light to speak of. This old knot in a maple tree was my best effort and that seems sadly lacking. I put it down to the time of year - cold and grey - the snow has mostly melted and everything seems brownish. I do like the rough bark and the shape of the knot, but what's the metaphor?
