Haar

Briefly down in Portobello this morning so took a quick look at the confluence of the Figgate Burn (the seaward end of our Braid Burn) and the Forth.

What was so impressive was the thick layer of mist, called haar, which we could watch drifting downriver to dissipate closer to the sea, where the previously hidden coast of Fife finally became visible. I actually took a video but it required a steadier hand than the freezing temperature would allow.

We then followed the coast westwards, passing through the haar until, heading south on rising ground, it thinned until we were above it. We often see just the top from home, watching it creep upriver.

Back home the snow remains, crisp and crunchy underfoot and covered in pawprints from foxes.
