The World Through My Eyes

By Marlieske

Grutjes...

I found an old cookbook from my mother in one of the cupboards... dated 1946. This recipe caught my eye while looking through the cookbook. Grutjes... never heard of and certainly never eaten...

Recipe:
Ingredients
1 l milk or buttermilk
200 gr buckwheat groats
1 pinch of salt
flower
butter or oil or lard

Bring the milk or buttermilk with the grits and salt to a boil, stirring, and let it cook until the spoon stands upright - 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer the grits mixture to two or more - depending on whether you want thicker or thinner fried grits - moistened plates. Let them cool down, cut the stiff slices into 6 or 8 points. Coat the points in the flour and fry in butter or oil or lard in a frying pan until browned on both sides. Serve with syrup or syrup sauce
