Santa is at least 101

This bisque Santa was my mother’s first Christmas present, given to her the day she was born. My mum would have been 101 today. We lost her suddenly, a heart attack a few months after her 85th Birthday.

My mother was not thrilled with a birthday two days before Christmas. Neither occasion meant many gifts in the 20s and 30s, an orange, hand knitted socks or a scarf perhaps. But the two celebrations often got lumped together, even as an only child, or maybe that made it easier. A sibling celebrating a June birthday might have her birthday a more singular event. This Santa was probably with her on both days, but his lips are sealed if she complained to him.

The courting couple in the picture frame are my mother’s parents. It was taken in front of our house in Machiasport circa 1919.

For the Record
This day came in with lashing rain and howling wind. It’s strangely warm too. Our rainy bomb cyclone is ramping up. We could have power outages, so I’m posting this in the wee hours to be safe.

All hands hoping this storm doesn’t ruin thousands of Christmas get togethers as the airports get slammed with horrible weather
