Muntjac or Barking Deer

B and I were glad to get some fresh air and exercise today after a couple of rainy days indoors.  We walked around Pensthorpe and were soon able to lose the holiday visitors.  There was a decidedly chilly wind this morning so I was glad that B hadn't suggested a coastal walk.

We came across the woodland hide along our route and it was surprisingly rich in wildlife.  As well as various birds visiting the feeders, we also say moorhens, a female pheasant, a pair of squirrels (one of which is in extras) and this pretty muntjac deer.

As you probably know, they originate from Asia and were introduced from China in 1838, originally into the park at Woburn belonging to the Duke of Bedford.  They are now gradually spreading out across the South East.  I've seen them wandering down our street a couple of times, (as they frequent the land belonging to nearby Holt Hall). We often hear their distinctive barking, especially during the night. They are now a conservation concern due to their impact on woodland ground flora.
