Rallycross At Knockhill

We were in two minds about heading up to Knockhill today, but a phone call basically instructed us to go, whether we liked it or not!

It was fairly bright on the journey up from the border, with the sun even making an appearance once or twice near Biggar. It was still bright as we drove over the Forth Road Bridge, but the closer we got to the race circuit, the greyer it got.

By the time we were stood on the bank watching the racing, it was wet. Very wet. All the photographers had their cameras nicely tucked up in their raincovers/ plastic bags. Mine had to just deal with the rain. (I'm not sure if it'll ever dry out again!)

Weather conditions didn't seem to bother most of the drivers, some seemed to revel in the tricky conditions. Andy Scott (pictured) won the final supercar race in conditions that could only be described as atrocious. We couldn't see the tower from the hairpin, it was as much as we could do to see the hairpin!

For all my complaining about the weather, I loved it. I'd rather it be wet than dry. Admittedly, they probably go faster in the dry, but I love the mud, the sliding, the spray....

Rallycross in general is pretty darn awesome. The noise of 6 supercars on the start line is so loud that you feel it as well as hear it. The acceleration from 0-60mph is faster than a Formula 1 car. It's not a contact sport, in theory, but as they all race together on a mixed surface lap, it does occasionally lead to a bit of "gentle tussling".
