On This Day In History
1916: Rasputin is murdered

Quote Of The Day
"..... if I am murdered by nobles and if they shed my blood, their hands will remain soiled with my blood, for twenty-five years they will not wash their hands of my blood. They will leave Russia, Brothers will kill brothers ...... if it was your relations who have wrought my death, no one of your family, that is to say none of your children or relations, will remain alive for more than two years."
(Grigori Rasputin in a 1916 letter to Tsarina Alexandra)

Bonus Quotes Of The Day
"This devil who was dying of poison, who had a bullet in his heart, must have been raised from the dead by the powers of evil. There was something apalling and monstrous in his diabolical refusal to die."
(Prince Felix Yussupov, Rasputin's murderer)

"There was a cat who really was gone."
(Boney M)

One of the most colourful, fascinating, larger-than-life figures in history. A few months after writing that letter to Alexandra, Rasputin was murdered by a nobleman and two years after that the reign of the Tsars was ended and the Romanovs were all killed. Was Rasputin a seer? Was he a faith-healer? He certainly eased the symptoms of, Alexia, Nicholas and Alexandra's son with prayer. Intriguing.

In my opinion, the great Tom Baker was born to play Rasputin; those wild eyes, that sonorous voice. I mean, just watch! However, if a remake of  Nicholas And Alexandra should be made, I believe there is another.

Do you hear that? That is the sound of inevitability.
