The 1798 Memorial

“Who fears to speak of ninety-eight?
Who blushes at the name?
When cowards mock the patriots fate
Who hangs his head for shame?”

The memorial to the Irish dead of 1798 is towards the top of the hill at Waverley cemetery, on the Coogee to Bondi coastal walk.

It was erected by the Irish National Association in 1898, with the names of many of the dead inscribed on the rear wall. A plaque honouring those who were executed after the 1916 Easter Rising was added in 1947. And lastly a plaque to the 10 H-Block hunger strikers who died in the Maze Prison in 1981.

Today a couple from Northern Ireland were there with the son they hadn’t seen for four years. I took a few photos for them.
