Still Life With Baked Beans (Wednesday 4 Jan 2023)

I inadvertantly opened a second tin of baked beans when there was another hiding at the back of the fridge. Although they are different brands, both have very similar looking contents and the listed ingredients are much the same and in similar proportions, although they were markedly different in price. So which tastes better?

In the interests of science I sampled cold delicious spoonfuls of each. There wasn't a huge amount of difference but the HP brand had a slightly softer taste, possibly due to having 4.5% sugar compared to 3.5% in the Sainsbury's inexpensive own brand. As a diabetic I try to keep sugar intake within reasonable limits. The Hubbard's tin therefore represents best value for money.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
A Winged Victory For The Sullen - Our Lord Debussy (2019)
This was played by Sara Mohr-Pietsch on Radio Three's Night Tracks as I was drifting off to sleep on the night of 13-14 December 2022. I made a mental note to find out the details the next day, but because of Christmas schedules and holidays the playlist did not appear on the website until the New Year. When I listened to it again it cast its spell in exactly the same way but sounded nothing like my memory of it.

It comes from the album The Undivided Five , which was produced in eight different recording studios across Europe. A Winged Victory For The Sullen's two members, Dustin O'Halloran and Adam Wiltzie, recorded in their own respective studios in Berlin and Brussels. Orchestral samples were recorded at Studio 22 at Magyar Rádió, Budapest, Hungary's official international broadcasting station, and several parts of the album were then re-recorded in Église du Béguinage in Brussels. O'Halloran and Wiltzie recorded additional grand piano at a woodland studio in northern Italy and "experimented with overdubs" at Australian composer Ben Frost's studio in Reykjavík. The final mix was conducted at Vox Ton in Berlin, where all previous A Winged Victory For The Sullen releases had been mixed.
