Newport’s Ecclesiastical Corner.

It has taken me a couple of days to return to this Blipfoto and provide some interesting text.

The smaller church on the left hand side is St Mary’s Episcopal Church. I have been inside it once and it is a fine interesting little space for worship.

The church is Newport Free Church which was built after the Disruption in the Church of Scotland. We have been in this church on several occasions and it was a very interesting building. Much of the complexity is to do with the difference in road levels at the junction. Situated at the west end of the High Street and looking along the axis of the street.

It has been converted into several apartments. These inevitably do very little for the form of the original interiors.

The house with the red and cream paintwork is a manse, for I think St Mary’s. I have referred to three histories of Newport and I cannot firm whether it is St Mary’s or the Free Church.

The white building is the Newport which has rooms. There is also a restaurant and an art gallery.
