A conundrum

Nothing very unusual with this Winter scene of a tree having fallen across the river. The strange thing is that the tree came down a few months ago about 100 yards upstream and was wedged across the river in that position. The most logical explanation is that it was carried downstream  in recent flood conditions despite the fact there are a number of bends  and outcrops of rock to negotiate in what is a very narrow river! It must have floated lengthways until it impaled itself and swung round with the force of the current?
