Bracket

In the stairwell of our extension we have some dead space where the stairs can't quite get to the wall creating a 25 cm deep shelf. For safety reasons we need to put something on this shelf and for need of space we also want to use the space, so we've bought three self assembly bookcases from Leroy Merlin. I'm a big fan of Ikea Billy bookcases, but that would have involved a long drive or a delivery charge, and the Billy was just the wrong size, so the Leroy Merlin Spaceo was selected.

We got three units and I've assembled them over the last day or so. They are all made of chipboard/furniture board with a plastic oak finish. They may say made in France, but the design isn't as good as Ikea nor is the quality. The overall fit and finish is fine, but all the neat features you are used to in Ikea are missing.

Today's back blip is a close up of the wall mounting bracket. I'm going to have to attach them to the wall, they aren't that tall so I wouldn't have bothered otherwise, but their location over a staircase, means it's probably a good idea. I'm going to first have to fit a batten to the rear of them that's the thickness of the skirting board, then position them all, in situ, then drill a pilot hole through the back panel, the batten and into the plasterboard, remove them all again, then drill a larger hold in the plaster to fit the butterfly bolts, then bolt them in place. It's going to be a right palaver...! Knowing my luck I'll hit the metal stud, which means a different screw and more faffing.... Don't you love DIY?
