Sheol an Iolaire

The stakes, outlining the shape of the ill-fated HMY Iolaire, protrude above the waters off South Beach in Stornoway. Iolaire sank in the early hours of January 1st, 1919 off Stornoway harbour. Although only a few dozen yards offshore, the force 9 gale that was blowing at the time prevented many from gaining the safety of dry land.
