Treatment for club foot, Zanzibar

A baby in Zanzibar recovers from a procedure to release her achilles tendon (Tenotomy), as part of her treatment for club foot.

The treatment of clubfoot using the ponseti method is an expanding feature of IMPACT's programmes in Bangladesh, Nepal and Zanzibar. We are investing in training for local doctors, physiotherapists and other medical staff (e.g. plaster technicians) to build up in-country expertise in the manipulation and casting of clubfoot patients.

Treatment works best if it is started immediately after a baby is born, so our disability prevention teams also travel to impoverished areas with the aim of identifying babies and children as early as possible.
