Linton Pound...

Quite by chance I came across this today, it's the Ordnance Survey map of a part of Linton from 1841. Just the other day I posted a photo of an old gateway in Bartlow Road that obviously predates all the buildings around it. This old map shows that the village pound was just there and that probably dated back to medieval times and maybe earlier. I'm happy to suggest that this was the gateway to the pound in later days, it certainly would explain why the gate is so wide but not wide enough for a cart to pass through.

Pounds were used to impound straying beasts and as a lairage back in the old droving days.

Hey NinjaShoe, I can see your house from here!
