Redhouse Castle

When we visited in 2017 we were fascinated by the ruined castle, with the ornamented entrance and doocot. We were not thrilled by the cafe on that day, feeling it rather cliquey, and have taken our coffee elsewhere.

We thought today to try again and were very impressed; though the facilities appeared much as before, it just seemed more friendly within the nurseries and the cafè.

The light on the red sandstone castle was lovely, this taken from the car park/ nursery side (with apple branch blowing over the viewfinder), the courtyard and older frontage lie to the right with the decorated entrance hidden by the ivy-covered wall. According to The Buildings of Scotland the castle was built by John Laing, Keeper of the Royal Signet, in two stages in the late C16 and shortly afterwards in the early C17, thus the difference in design between the south-east and north-west faces.

Suitably replete, we continued via Fenton Barns to browse and bite in Haddington, popped in to Miss Flum's and thence home.
