There are several old fingerposts in East Lothian with the distances marked in fractions of a mile with one at West Saltoun showing distances in fifths, quarters and eighths of a mile.  We walked along all those roads doing a figure of eight from Glenkinchie to East Saltoun where the church was striking 12 as we went past then returned passing the signpost again and then treating ourselves to a delicious shared platter of cold venison and smoked salmon at the Glenkinchie distillery.  The statue of the Johnnie Walker “Striding man” stands at the door with a Scottish deerhound called Bruce who was an important member of the team in the 1920s controlling the rodents instead of cats which were normally used.
