The sky was blue and the sun shone all day with very little wind and unlike at home there was no evidence of snow or icy pavements at Musselburgh.  The incoming tide was covering the mud flats which is a haven for many waders and sea birds that feast on the rich mud at the mouth of the Esk.  Behind a flock of brightly coloured wigeon were nibbling the grass beside the river and in front dozens of oyster catchers and other birds were retreating from the approaching water on their mudbank.  It would have been a good day for a long walk but we were expecting a very welcome visitor for a late lunch.
