Farewell Party

Today Friends of the Smith museum and Art gallery in Stirling held a farewell party.

It was a bittersweet event with over 150  people gathered to celebrate both the Friends 50th anniversary and their demise.

Moira Lawson, Chair of Friends of the Smith said:” “We are all in our 80s. We have tried, and failed to find volunteers to join our committee.”

Sadly this reflects a current trend amongst volunteer organisations, one that Covid accelerated, with fewer people prepared to give of their time to the voluntary  sector.

Friends of the Smith was formed in 1973 when the Museum was under threat of closure, when a group of interested individuals fought to keep the Museum open...
