The Boys From Brazil

Thanks to Archie, Jade, Ali and Jamie for my perfect present of a bottle of cachaca and enough limes to fill a massive box all the way from South America..

Cachaca, a spirit distilled from sugercane, is one of the most popular drinks in Brazil. Some of the better varieties are available in larger liquor stores and supermarkets around the world. My personal favourites are Nega Fulho in it's cool straw lined bottle and of course the classic Pitu with the superb lobster brand logo.(In my book a design classic)

Time to prepare a Caipirinhia - the national alcoholic drink of Brazil

Place the halved or quartered lime pieces, pulp side up, in the bottom of an old fashioned glass or heavy tumbler. Add raw brown sugar and crush the lime and sugar together with a pestle or the end of a wooden spoon (be sure to crush the pieces pulp side up or too much bitter lime oil will be released from the zest). Add the cachaca, stir to mix and add the crushed ice(not blended: manually crushed is best). Stir again add short straw and serve. also add fresh cherries if desired and Bob's Yer Uncle!
