Gravestone Robbery?

Not to be confused grave robbery as practised by Burke and Hare, late of Edinburgh.

Today’s Blipfoto is one of some 30 photographs I took at Abdie Church yesterday. I spent most of the morning looking at these photographs and uncovered this particular photograph of a memorial stone.

This shows that two stone columns are missing or have been removed. They were most likely circular in cross section and made of marble or granite.

This particular stone is a very fine example of stone carving and features some interesting details.

There are several memorial stones surrounding the exterior of the building. There are also many more fixed to the interior surfaces of the nave and some laid on the floor.

They are of no great interest to my current research into Pictish Stones. However, they will interest people researching their ancestors.

I have been invited to speak to the local Probus Club on ‘Scotland’s Sacred Places and to arrange a guided tour featuring some of the Pictish Stones in the Kingdom of Fife.

I am regularly invited to address various groups on a variety of subjects.
