Gratitude

This is the Maria chapel in Woensdrecht, the village next door. Both Woensdrecht and Hoogerheide were almost completely destroyed in Oct 1944 during the battle of the Allied Forces against the German forces to free the Antwerp harbour. In our region the Allied Forces were mainly Canadian. They were able to free the county but at terrible losses, so many Canadian soldiers died. There is a monument to the brave soldiers across the road from the chapel, and memorial services are held there every year on Oct 24 and at Christmas Eve. This chapel was raised by the mainly catholic inhabitants of Woensdrecht to thank Mary that despite the total destruction of the village there were hardly any civilian deaths. The text says 'Woensdrecht thanks Maria' . I thought there was a good mix of roughage and smoothness in the image for today's MonoMonday theme, with thanks to pinkhairedlady for hosting this month.

Thanks very much for the kind comments, stars and even hearts for yesterday's tulip petals macro !
