The Cannonball Tree

or Couroupita guianensis
This tree is native to The Amazon basin but there are quite a number of them dotted around Singapore.
It is VERY unusual, although they grow up to 25 metres (and this tree was pretty tall) the flowers and fruit appear near the lower part of the tree. The "fruits" (the size of a large coconut) are quite heavy and some places ban them from parks etc because of danger from falling fruit.
Despite it's somewhat bizarre appearance this tree apparently has quite a few medicinal uses.
There are a number of these trees just next to where I live, and they never fail to fascinate me...but then maybe I am a little weird.
