Irrigating the lucerne.

The men got over 50 big bales of lucerne from under the pivot. Now it is being watered to grow the next lot. Lucerne is an amazing plant - a deep rooted legume and very palatable and nutritious for stock. It can kill cattle with bloat if they gorge on it. Also can founder horses and especially ponies, so has to be grazed with caution.

It grows like mad in summer and will be grazed through winter. It isn’t so lush in winter so not as problematic. It will persevere for several seasons.

You will notice that the sprays are fine close to me and putting out much more water at the far end. That is so that the outside of the pivot gets its share as it moved around. Andrew says that the slower, gentle watering on the inside does a better job.

We can eat it too, as alfalfa sprouts.
