Strichen Town House

Strichen is a traditional planned village founded by Lord Strichen in 1764 to promote manufacturing, largely in the form of weaving on his estate.

The town house stands in the centre of the village and was built in the early 19th century for the widow of the founder's grandson at a cost of £2,000. It is in the style of a 16th century Scottish Tolbooth. Originally the ground floor arches were open and a covered market was held here. Later the arches were filled in and the ground floor became a female school.

Sadly the building is now on the at risk register although the community hopes to develop it for a variety of uses.
