Shine a light.

This is the item I blipped yesterday but now fully cleaned and lightly repaired. The can is a "Flare Lamp" and was used by locomotive drivers to provide light when oiling steam locomotives.
The BR( M ) denotes British Railways ( Midland Region ) which was formerly the London, Midland, and Scottish Railway, ( LMS until nationalization in 1948.
The lamp would have held Paraffine , and the wick is in the spout.

Thanks to Stuart DB for pointing me in the right direction.
