Leith

I've enjoyed looking at the architecture in the Leith area over the last few weeks.

In the late 19th century the push to make improvements was lead by the then Provost of Leith Dr John Henderson.  The Artisans' and Labourers' Dwellings Improvement Act 1875 allowed Councils to buy up areas of slum dwellings so they could be cleared and rebuilt.  The Artisans' and Labourers' Dwellings Act (Leith Improvement Scheme) was passed in 1880 leading to tall tenements replacing most of the slums and 16th and 17th century buildings.

Scottish architect James Simpson was the town architect of Leith.
